ApproachWe have been working with the Glasgow Academy continuously for 20 years on a variety of projects and were commissioned in 2006 to design the new preparatory school for primaries 1-6 and nursery students.
The brief was developed in collaboration with the school - a team consisting of primary school head, general manager and representatives from the board of governors.
The Glasgow Academy is renowned for providing high quality education and the new school aimed to continue this tradition and facilitate the latest teaching methods and technologies. The brief set out to capatlise on views of the River Kelvin and create a school that nurtured the pupils and gave them a unique and inspiring place to learn.
The site on waste ground at the edge of the school campus is bounded by Belmont Street, Colebrook Terrace and the banks of the River Kelvin, providing both an attractive and challenging site to develop.
We designed glass-fronted classrooms that face the river Kelvin and give the students a light, airy and inspiring place to learn. The layout deliberately segregates nursery and primary students and each age group has an independent entrance, independent circularly system and separate playgrounds. The playgrounds themselves were designed by the pupils and provide a fun and colorful space for them to play.
Breakout spaces on each floor help to maximise the learning environment and the building is topped with a tented rooftop meeting area that provides a unique space to pupils to meet.
The finished school provides a caring and personal environment to learn and blends the best traditional values with todays must up to date teaching methods and education technologies.
