Mechanochemical Cell Biology Extension

Award Winning Laboratory

The new extension to BMJ Architects’ award winning Mechanochemical Cell Biology Building at the University of Warwick is complete. The project provides new high quality laboratory, write up and support spaces in line with the Biomedical Cell Biology Division’s need to expand the existing superior research facility, in order to accommodate 40 more researchers.

The BMJ team worked closely with the Client and users to produce a building to serve the functional requirements of the brief as well as providing a pleasant environment for the users utilising the prime location of Gibbet Hill Campus, next to the trees and pond. BMJ developed the project up to receipt of planning consent and stayed in the client team in a supervisory role during construction.

Physical and planning constraints presented further challenges that were effectively overcome through the design development stages. The existing building was kept operational throughout the whole project requiring careful planning and the provision of temporary facilities such as a temporary Cryostore and bottle store.
