MRC, Advance Training Centre & Laboratories

Specialist Training Laboratories

The MRC Harwell Training Centre ‘Advance’ provides specialist training laboratories, organised around a central break-out area.  This offers a welcoming entrance and social interaction space.  The Centre comprises a carefully adapted and refurbished existing building, together with a thoughtfully planned extension giving access to the 3 wings of the building.

The architecturally disparate elements of the existing building have been visually unified with the new extension through the application of new rainscreen cladding, together with a consistent palette of materials and colours. Set within a newly landscaped setting, facilities include training laboratories, multi-functional teaching spaces, seminar rooms of varying sizes, together with IT, first aid and kitchen facilities.

New lightwells provide natural light to the deep plan, and create a sense of openness throughout, combined with curated views through the building achieved by careful positioning of internal glazed screens and external glazing, allowing scientific learning and teaching to be observed in progress.
