State-of-the-Art-Laboratory

The Discovery Centre for Translational and Interdisciplinary Research (CTIR) forms BMJ Architects’ latest addition to the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. The new annexe provides over four storeys of laboratories, associated office and meeting space, including a state-of-the art Drug Discovery High Throughput Screening Laboratory and the Laboratory for Quantitative Proteomics.

The facility also includes an open-plan floor dedicated to interdisciplinary research bringing together Mathematical Biology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Data Analysis and Software Development. An Atrium located at the heart of the complex, meets the client’s aspiration ‘to enable innovation by breaking down barriers between scientific disciplines’. Formal, informal and ad hoc interactions are possible in the main atrium space ‘the street’ as well as the networking center, café, a 50-seat seminar room, offices, meeting rooms and breakout spaces.

BMJ Architects worked closely with the University to develop the programme of accommodation, interior design and art strategy to ensure a dynamic social and interaction zone was delivered. The facade also incorporates artwork, by Elaine Shemilt, perforated into the andoised aluminum cladding panels. The work, entitled ‘The Scales Of Life’, represents the 4 scales of Life Science research: molecular, organellar, cellular and tissue, reflecing the significant research into life sciences undertaken within the facility.
